The men and women that populate labs and similar environments around the world are certainly no strangers to the concept of heightened sanitation. Personal protective equipment like a mask or a thermometer were already important, although they've become critically important over the last few months in particular. As the virus rages on, we know it can often be difficult to find these products. That’s why we’ve added them to our store for our easy access.

What Is the CDC Saying?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, labs and similar environments should be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis to help control the spread of the virus as much as possible. At a bare minimum, employees need to be practicing a routine cleaning of frequently touched services, and more frequent cleaning and disinfection may be necessary based on the level of use.

In terms of the actual disinfecting process, you're recommended to use only an EPA-registered disinfectant. Users should wear skin protection (and probably eye protection) while they disinfect because of the potential for splash hazards, and adequate ventilation should always be guaranteed.

What Happens If Someone Gets Sick?

If laboratory personnel does get sick, the CDC has some very specific best practices to follow.

First, you need to close off ALL areas that were used by the person who became sick. You may not have to totally shut down your operations, provided that you can effectively close off those impacted areas. Likewise, it's recommended that you wait at least 24 hours before you begin the cleaning and disinfecting process. If that isn't possible, wait as long as you can.

All areas used by the person who is sick should be cleaned, including but not limited to places like offices, bathrooms and other common areas in addition to the lab itself. As a best practice, consider turning off any fans in the room or the central HVAC system so that any impacted particles won't get accidentally circulated elsewhere in the facility.

According to the CDC, if it has been more than seven days since the person who was sick used the lab or other elements of your facility, additional cleaning and disinfection aren't actually necessary.
