Malt Extract Agar

Malt Extract Agar is a solid medium used for the cultivation and maintenance of fungi, particularly yeast and molds.

Principles The medium is based on the formula recommended by Thom and Church. Pancreatic Digest of Gelatin provide nitrogenous sources for the growth of yeasts and molds, while Maltose, Dextrin and Glycerol are the main carbohydrates. Agar is the gelifying agent. Its low pH prevents the growth of bacteria, while allowing that of fungi.
