CHEMetrics Nitrite Test Kits

Nitrite is an intermediate compound in the nitrogen cycle (NO₂⁻) that forms during the biological decomposition of organic matter and oxidation of ammonia. Because Nitrite is rapidly converted to nitrate (NO₃⁻), it is typically present in low concentrations in natural waters. Elevated nitrite levels can indicate nutrient pollution, incomplete nitrification, wastewater contamination, agricultural runoff, or process upset in biological treatment systems. Monitoring nitrite concentrations provides valuable insight into nitrification and denitrification processes, helping operators identify treatment inefficiencies, nutrient loading issues, and potential environmental impact before they become significant problems.

CHEMetrics Nitrite Test Kits provide fast, reliable nitrite analysis for drinking water, surface water, wastewater, industrial process water, aquaculture systems, and environmental monitoring applications. Both visual and instrumental test kits are available, utilizing the Azo Dye Formation method to deliver accurate nitrite measurements across a wide range of concentration levels and testing requirements.

Nitrite Test Methods

Azo Dye Formation Method

CHEMetrics Nitrite Test Kits utilize the Azo Dye Formation method, a well-established analytical technique recognized in Standard Methods and EPA procedures for nitrite determination. In an acidic solution, nitrite reacts with a primary aromatic amine through a diazotization reaction and subsequently couples with another organic compound to form a highly color azo dye. The intensity of the resulting pink-orange color is directly proportional to the nitrite concentration in the sample. Results are reported as ppm (mg/L) nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N), with conversion factors available for reporting as nitrite (NO₂⁻).

The Azo Dye Formation method offers excellent sensitivity, accuracy, and reproducibility for monitoring nitrite in environmental and industrial water samples. It is suitable for routine water quality testing, wastewater treatment process control, aquaculture monitoring, and regulatory compliance applications. The method is mercury-free and provides rapid results with minimal sample preparation.

Which Testing System is Right for You?

CHEMetrics offers ampoule-based testing systems for nitrite analysis: CHEMets® Visual Kits, Vacu-Vials® Instrumental Kits, and Titrets® Nitrite Test Kits. Each system uses CHEMetrics’ self-filling ampoule technology, which automatically draws the correct sample volume into the ampoule for fast, convenient testing with minimal operator technique requirements.

CHEMets Visual Kits use visual color comparison to determine nitrite concentration and require no instrumentation. These kits are ideal for routine field testing, environmental monitoring, wastewater process checks, aquaculture applications, troubleshooting, and cost-effective screening programs. Results are obtained by comparing the developed sample color to calibrated comparator standards. Each kit contains everything required to perform 30 tests (except distilled water) and is packaged in a durable, portable carrying case for field or laboratory use.

Vacu-Vials Instrumental Kits use a compatible photometer or spectrophotometer (sold separately) to measure color intensity and calculate nitrite concentration. These kits are ideal for laboratory testing, process monitoring and control, regulatory compliance programs, facilities requiring higher accuracy and repeatability, and applications that benefit from electronic recordkeeping and quantitative analytical data. Each Vacu-vial kit contains supplies for 30 tests, including all necessary reagents and accessories for instrumental analysis. Vacu-vial kits are compatible with CHEMetrics photometers and spectrophotometers capable of accepting a 13mm round cell.

For high-range nitrite applications, CHEMetrics offers Titrets Nitrite Test Kits utilizing a ceric sulfate titration with ferroin indicator. These kits provide a convenient alternative to traditional drop-count titrations and are well suited for industrial process streams and other applications requiring measurement of elevated nitrite concentrations. Each kit includes 30 self-filling ampoules, a titrettor, sample cup, and instructions for fast and reliable testing in the field or laboratory.
