Green Chemists Find a Way to Turn Cashew Nut Shells into Sunscreen

three_quarter_HR.gif

A team of international scientists has found an environmentally friendly way of producing potential sunscreens by using cashew nut shells, a waste material.

The team of “green chemists” from the University of the Witwatersrand, along with colleagues from Universities in Germany, Malawi and Tanzania, are working on techniques to produce useful compounds from wood and other fast growing non-edible plant waste, through a chemical process named xylochemistry (wood chemistry). By using cashew nut shells, the team has produced new aromatic compounds that show good UVA and UVB absorbance, which may be applied to protect humans, livestock, as well as polymers or coatings from harmful rays from the sun. The research has just been published as the cover article of the European Journal of Organic Chemistry.

Here’s Where The Cows Are

three_quarter_HR.gif

Dairy-Animals.jpg

While the number of dairies in the U.S. has shrunk significantly over the past 30 years, where those dairies are located hasn’t changed much. According to the 2017 USDA Ag Census, the upper Midwest and Northeast are still home to the most dairies.

In our analysis of the USDA data, we chose to include only those dairies that have more than 50 cows. With this approach, Lancaster County, Pa., has the most dairies, at 865. Four of the next five top counties are all in the upper Midwest, with three of those coming from Wisconsin and one from Minnesota. Franklin County, Pa., folds in the middle at No. 4, and two more Pennsylvania counties land at Nos. 7 and 8.

Can People Taste the Difference Between Canned and Bottled Wine?

canned-wine.jpg

The debate over bottles versus cans used to be almost entirely the province of the beer community. And importantly, in the past decade or so, the preference has swung dramatically from glass towards aluminum. Now, as canned wines become not only an acceptable but also a hip choice, vino is facing a similar discussion. Granted, wine aficionados choosing to suddenly prefer cans over bottles seems highly unlikely, but a recent study suggests that, for average drinkers, the taste difference is essentially negligible.

A blind taste test from WIC Research — a group that, as their name implies, specifically tracks the market for “wine in cans” — found that when 86 adults were given identical wines poured into a cup, one from a bottle and one from a can, 48.5 percent preferred the bottled version compared to 45.3 percent who preferred the canned version (with 5.8 percent showing no preference), according to Beverage Daily.

LuciPac™ A3 Sanitation System… NEW Now AOAC Approved

LuciPac AOAC.jpg
Only Kikkoman’s new LuciPac A3 Sanitation System, distributed by Weber Scientific, detects ATP+ADP+AMP with one swab to give you the whole picture. Its patented A3 Technology has been proven to detect residues and microorganisms that others miss.

The proof is in the testing
Independent laboratory testing confirms that the Kikkoman A3 technology provides detection of residues at levels much lower than other tests on the market. Using residue from many different foods, laboratory testing proved that Kikkoman A3 technology produced a test result (relative light units - RLU) an order of magnitude or higher than competitive products. In many of the foods tested, Kikkoman A3 technology showed a strong presence of residue while the competitive products produced test results below typical action levels showing that Kikkoman A3 can reduce the risks from false negative results.

How E. coli knows how to cause the worst possible infection

e Coli.jpg

A pair of University of Virginia School of Medicine scientists have revealed how E. coli seeks out the most oxygen-free crevices of your colon to cause the worst infection possible. The discovery could one day let doctors prevent the infection by allowing E. coli to pass harmlessly through the body.

The new discovery shows just how the foodborne pathogen knows where and when to begin colonizing the colon on its way to making you sick. By recognizing the low-oxygen environment of the large intestine, the dangerous bacterium gives itself the best odds of establishing a robust infection -- one that is punishing for the host.
