You Need to Stop Believing These Lies You’ve Been Told About Drinking Beer

Beer might be one of the most popular beverages in the world, and one of the best times to drink it is on a hot summer day.

The delightful drink has been around for thousands of years, and some argue that it sparked the domestication of grain that was essential for our transition from hunting-and-gathering societies to agricultural civilizations.

But beer is also commonly misunderstood.

Even regular beer drinkers will frequently cite myths about how a beer gets skunked or how many calories are in dark beers. In honor of Memorial Day — an excellent beer-drinking holiday, which many Americans will be celebrating beside a grill with a few craft brews — CLICK HERE to debunk some of those myths.

Strawberries again top 2018's 'Dirty Dozen' fruits and veggies

Once again, strawberries top the list of the 12 "dirtiest" fruits and vegetables, according to the Environmental Working Group.

Every year since 2004, the group -- a nonprofit, nonpartisan environmental organization -- ranked pesticide contamination in 47 popular fruits and vegetables for its Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce.

Spinach is the second dirtiest item on the "Dirty Dozen" list, followed by (in order of contamination) nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes and sweet bell peppers. Each of these foods tested positive for pesticide residues and contained higher concentrations of pesticides than other produce.

In fact, nearly 70% of conventionally grown -- non-organic -- produce samples were contaminated, the tests indicated.

The Best Cheeses For Grilled Cheese, According To People Who Truly Know

Even if your cooking skills are confined to pasta and pizza bagels, you know how to make a grilled cheese sandwich. It's the ultimate sandwich, one forged in childhood memories that translates beautifully into adulthood. Itching for Comfort

Cow Brush Video.jpg

Watch this cow love up on an automated brush.

Some cows push and shove to get more feed or more water. Some push to get onto the rotary platform to get milked. Cows at MurphKo Dairy near Eden, Wis. compete for time at the cow brushes. Brian Murphy and his family have 15 brushes installed in two barns on the 1,400-cow dairy. There’s even a brush in each of the heifer pens for bred and just weaned heifers.

“The brushes really help to keep the cows clean, especially this time of year when they are getting rid of their hair coat,” Murphy says. “The cows love to stand and rub against the brushes. It gives them something to rub against other than a stall, railing or something more substantial.”

GMO Yeast Mimics Flavors Of Hops, But Will Craft Brewers Bite?

Brewing beer, it is often said, is both an art and a science. New research, however, has some in the beer industry concerned that the science of brewing could be advancing too far.

A team of beer-brewing chemists and geneticists in California has created a genetically modified yeast that produces hoppy aromas and flavors without any interaction with the fragrant blossoms themselves. In other words, they've developed a way to make beer hoppy without using hops.

Brewer Matthew Brynildson feels the research, which was published March 20 in the journal Nature Communications, opens doors that he would just as well see remain closed.

Using the bathroom hand dryer just flings poo particles all over you, study finds

hand dryer.jpg

The next time you’re done washing your hands in a public restroom, maybe make your next stop the paper towel dispenser.

That’s what a group of scientists at the University of Connecticut would advise, anyway.

They found out by asking themselves, “How clean are the restrooms where I work?” So they placed bacteria-collecting plates in 36 restrooms throughout the university’s academic health center.

As it turns out, the hand dryers in public restrooms are blowing more than hot air. Sure, they’re great at saving paper, but they’re also flinging nasty little poo particles all over the place, including onto the hands and faces of those who use them.
