America’s Best Convenience Stores, Ranked

Wawa NLT.jpg

The best food you’ll find on the road.

They’re everywhere, convenience stores, a fact of life, often not all that pleasant to deal with. Every now and then, however, a regional chain comes along, inspiring—typically through an array of prepared food offerings, because isn’t food always the way to people’s hearts—what appears to be almost unshakeable loyalty. Barbecue. Fried chicken. Italian hoagies stuffed with cured meats, deep-fried burritos, breakfast pizzas. You name it, we’re eating it at the gas station, and sometimes, what we are eating is seriously delicious.

American convenience stores have inspired wedding photo shoots, music videos, epic road trips, award-winning films, tattoos, countless late night arguments in college dorms, plays—even heated debates in New York City offices where otherwise demure professional people can typically be found working quietly together.

Food Safety Thermometer with Infrared

HACCP Compliant surface and internal temperature

The compact Food Safety Thermometer offers both surface and internal temperature readings in one portable convenient unit. Instantly check the surface temperature of food with the single push of a button using infrared technology. The built-in bright white flashlight helps illuminate the surface being measured. When regulations demand compliance to internal temperature such as with prepared meats, fish, or poultry, simply fold the penetration probe out to any angle, and read internal temperature on the large backlit LCD display. Programmable high and low alarms enable easy spot-checks for food safety. A fully sealed IP65 waterproof housing stands up to the rigors of food service and helps your establishment meet HACCP and FDA’s Food Safety requirements.

Waze Just Added a Feature to Help Drivers Steer Clear of Unplowed Roads

waze app NLT.jpg

For people traveling through states accustomed to dealing with harsh winter weather, there are probably satisfactory systems in place for clearing heaps of snow from the roads practically as soon as they form—but that’s your best-case scenario. Storms can hit with an unanticipated vengeance, leaving even the most well-prepared places with many dangerous or even fully blocked roads.

To keep you from having to risk unplowed and icy roads on the way home for the holidays, Waze collaborated with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to develop a feature that helps you avoid them.

According to a VDOT press release, the new option works much like Waze’s other features: Users report when they encounter an icy or unplowed area, and Waze will then warn other drivers when they’re approaching that same area, giving them the option to choose a different route. Simplemost reports that upon nearing an unplowed road, you’ll see a snowflake icon next to the words Unplowed Road.

The 10 Biggest Food Trends of 2019

Food trends-2019 NLT.jpg

Food trends are a little like avocados: almost ripe, almost ripe, almost ripe, almost ripe, VERY RIPE, and then … over/dead/done with. Most food trends percolate for years before they finally earn their buzz and subsequently vanish into oblivion (kind of like people who peak in high school)!

And so, in the spirit of the end of another year, the Kitchn editors formed a quasi yearbook committee to make some proverbial food trend guacamole. Here are the 2019 food trends that were the talk of the town.

A Day in the Craft Brewery Lab, part 4: Updating your standard operating procedures

In this series of articles, Amy Todd, owner and operator of Zymology Labs, a third-party beer testing lab, who also works part-time in the lab at Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, gives us a detailed ground-floor view of the day-to-day lab routines that separate quality craft breweries from the pack.

Just as in any job, there are some things I do every day, some things only once a week and some even less than that. Many of my tasks in the lab are multi-step procedures. How do I make sure I’m carrying out tasks correctly, and the same way that I did last time? Wouldn’t it be great if with the flip of a page, or a click of the mouse, you could have all the information you needed to perform a specific task right in front of you, complete with pictures?

Today in the lab I’m updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). I like to do this every so often to make sure they’re current and to see which ones still need to be written.
