10 Food Products That (Thankfully) Flopped

three_quarter_HR.gif

Jell-o NLT.jpg

When we go to the supermarket, we have certain expectations of the products that we’ll see there. For example, french fries will not taste like chocolate. Jell-O will not be celery-flavored. Candy bars will be sweet, not taste like a chicken dinner. When these expectations are turned on their heads, not only is there a bit of bewilderment, it’s just bizarre. And it’s not until the shock wears off that we actually ask ourselves, “Why would anyone possibly want to buy this?”

A Career of Making Good Decisions All Along the Way

Bay Anna and Fred.jpg

Last May, Fred Weber, his wife Bay and daughter Anna, explored the national parks in America’s southwest. This May will find them cruising the Greek Islands with friends. If things go as planned, next year will take them to Iceland and Scotland. When he’s not touring distant places, Fred prefers to stay close to home — his farm house in Princeton, New Jersey, a beach house on the Jersey shore, a condo in Philadelphia and, of course, the familiar setting of his office at Weber Scientific in Hamilton, New Jersey.

Food-allergens 2-NLT.jpg

Undeclared allergens a leading cause of food recalls in U.S.

Food recalls related to illness outbreaks tend to get a lot of headlines, but undeclared allergens in foods continue to be a leading cause of recalls.

In the past 60 days, there have been 44 food recalls posted by the Food and Drug Administration, with 19 of them for undeclared allergens. That would have by far accounted for the majority of food recalls, had it not been for 10 cheese recalls that involved one manufacturer.

For 2016, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports 34 of the 122 food recalls under its jurisdiction were because of undeclared allergens. That’s more recalls than E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria contamination caused in 2016, which combined accounted for 27 recalls of meat, poultry and catfish in 2016.
