Hopewell will soon be home to two of the most ambitious breweries in NJ

The-Referend-Bier-Blendery NLT.jpg

Hopewell is a couple of towns over from Hamilton, NJ, headquarters of Weber Scientific. A number of Weber employees live in this quaint town. Here is a story about their emerging craft brew scene.

James Priest and Alex Helms had never met before a few months ago, but in a way they've been traveling on the same road for some time.

They have each spent the last several years on a mission to learn everything there is to know about the business of craft brewing. They've moved from place to place, working long hours for low pay, doing all sorts of jobs at some of the top breweries, restaurants and wineries in the country. Now both are preparing to start new brewing operations in the Hopewell Valley. And neither has yet reached his 30th birthday.

If all goes well this summer, the entrepreneurs will double the count of beer producers in Mercer County, from two to four. But rather than replicating the success of New Jersey's 47 other breweries with their familiar portfolios of ales and lagers, they are hoping to take local beer to another level.

Weber Scientific's exhibit at the Craft Brewing Convention was heavily attended.

Peel Plate(R)  Microbial Test (Charm Sciences)

Plate Peel-groupNLT.jpg

A better way to maximize microbiology productivity

Peel Plate bacterial tests are simplified culture methods for detecting microorganisms. Tests are available for Aerobic Plate Count (AC), Coliform and E. coli (EC), and Yeast and Molds (Y&M). The AC and EC Plates are AOAC-RI and PMO-NCIMS approved. Each version of these tests contains non-selective or selective medium and follows conventional microbiologic procedures for time and temperature of incubation.

The tests are prepared media in a shallow dish with an adhesive top. Plates are ready-to-use and no spreading device is needed. Just add the sample to the middle and it wicks through the media and solidifies. Invert the test, stack multiple tests together (if appropriate) and incubate. The sample wicks rapidly to cover entire surface. An air gap between the plate and cover allows colony picking and determination of microbial morphology.

Peel Plate tests are used in dairy products, ground meats, other foods, contact surfaces and water. Colony development is easily quantified by color.

Top 10 Mistakes in pH Measurement

pH MistakesNLT.jpg

Are you making errors when measuring pH?

Proper technique in pH measurement is a matter that is a bit hazy among some of Hanna users. Questions like, "how often should I calibrate?" and "how often should I replace my electrode?" are commonplace for anyone starting a pH measurement process.

The team at Hanna has seen a lot of good (and bad) pH measurement practices throughout the company's 38 years of experience.

They've compiled a list of the top 10 mistakes in pH measurement, as well as advice on what to do instead.
