Do your body good - wrap yourself in milk

Milk has long been touted as great for our bones. It’s the base for our most loved dairy products. Thanks to a young German designer and biochemist named Anke Domaske, however, it also makes a very nice dress. Qmilch, a combination of quality and the German word for milk, is a fabric that is both eco-friendly and wonderful to the touch. It surpasses the quality of cotton and is said to have a similar sensation to silk, but it’s as easy to wash and dry as everyday wear.

The inspiration to create Qmilch came after a long search for fabric that would be safe for those with extremely sensitive skin to wear. Casein is found in milk and many products that treat skin sensitivity. While milk fibers have been used to create fabrics before, Domaske wanted to create something entirely organic.

After two years of trial and error, working with a research lab, Domaske and her team of six finally landed on a process of reducing milk to a protein powder that is then boiled and pressed into strands that can be woven into a fabric.

The fabric not only feels fantastic, but also only uses a fraction of the water it would take to create the equivalent amount of cotton fabric. Although it costs a little more than organic cotton to create, Domaske uses organic milk that would have gone to waste--milk that has failed to meet the very strict German quality standard. Qmilch won the innovation award of Germany's Textile Research Association, which recognized it as a new, sustainable fiber that could revolutionize the clothing industry.

Weber Scientific Customers Reach $10K in Charitable Redemptions

Weber Scientific reports that a total of $10,310 in charitable redemptions by their customers was reached this December.  Customers participating in Weber’s “Frequent Buyers Program” accumulate points based upon purchases. Points can be redeemed for a variety of practical and fun gifts or, in this case, contributed to charity.

In the fall of 2008, Weber Scientific introduced the charitable giving component to this popular program.  With Weber’s close ties to the dairy industry Heifer International was a natural choice. Their mission is to end global hunger and poverty with gifts of livestock and training, thereby helping families improve their nutrition and generate income in sustainable ways.

In 2010, Children’s Safe Drinking Water was added. CSDW’s goal is to save one life every hour by delivering more than 2 billion liters of clean drinking water every year by 2020.
